As Christmas comes around the colder weather settles in, and it can be a harsh reminder that summer is officially over! If you are craving some winter sun, why not take a short break somewhere sunny? A week away in a warmer climate can be easier than you think with these great locations only a few hours flight away.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a great choice for a relaxing break, with stunning scenery and consistently high temperatures all year round! Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerventura and Lanzarote can all reach an average temperature of 22 degrees throughout October, and the islands still bask in 6 hours of sunshine a day in December. With endless stretches of sandy beaches, the Canaries won’t disappoint if you are dreaming of a sun bed, but there’s also plenty of activities and sightseeing to get on with – in Lanzarote, you can check out the impressive volcanoes at Timanfaya National Park, whilst Tenerife’s coast offers snorkelling and scuba diving.

Morocco offers an exotic winter sun location – less than 4 hours flight from the UK, your holiday in Morocco will introduce you to a whole new world, with plenty of luxury hotels. Explore the vibrant city of Marrakech or relax on the beaches in Agadir (which has a sunshine record of 300 days per year!). Best of all, Morocco has reliable temperatures throughout the year, usually reaching late 20s even into the winter. If you are looking for something to keep you busy, try camel riding through the desert, take a boat trip to see the dolphins, or experience the flamboyant Moroccan street markets – filled with famed snake charmers, story tellers and magicians.

Greek Islands

Winter is one of the best times to visit Greece, when the weather is still warm but not as unbearably hot as the summer months. During October, the average sea temperature is still 23 degrees, so perfect for days at the beach! With a group of Greek islands to choose from (all only a 4-hour flight!), you can experience the bustling nightlife of Corfu’s coastline, or find a more relaxing spot on the picturesque island of Santorini – either way, you are sure to enjoy the sunshine and the array of fantastic Greek food.

Portugal can be a little cooler over the winter months, but it is still a good choice for an affordable winter sun holiday, with temperatures of around 20 degrees in October. The Algarve is one of Portugal’s most popular holiday destinations, with a large, lively town offering a multitude of activities, as well as some world famous golf courses! If you are looking for some peace and quiet, why not visit the Portuguese island of Madeira? Nicknamed the ‘Floating Garden’ due to its stunning botanical gardens, Madeira is a relatively less known spot for a getaway and offers beautiful coastlines as well as natural salt water swimming pools!
