Jeffery Long is an 86 year old veteran Paratrooper who decided to walk 86 miles along the Thames to raise money for the Royal British Legion. To collect money, he set up a profile on fundraising platform justgiving.com with a goal to raise £1000.
After this picture was posted on Paula’s Modeste social media profile, amazing things happened.
Jeffrey was fundraising with no social media activity, and had raised just £300 when he met Paula Modeste at Windsor station on Saturday. The two got to talking and Paula decided to share his story on her Facebook profile:
“I met this handsome chap on Saturday while plotted up at Windsor train station. He is 86! He was in full camo get up and spotted I had the same jacket on. We chatted and laughed while we waited for our train, then I had the pleasure of sitting with him for the journey. He’s walking 86 miles for his 86 years in aid of the poppy appeal. Doing it without a map or loads of publicity (he’s not social media savvy ♀) He’s just doing it armed with a justgiving page, keen sense of direction and a massive heart. If you can drop a few quid his way, please do. He’s so deserving. He was only at 8% of his target on Saturday night. How sad would it be if he didn’t reach £1000 or even smash it! His name is Jeffrey Long MBE and he is a legend .”
Following the post, Jeffrey began to see an amazing response on his JustGiving page. The post was also spotted by comedian Jason Manford who shared it with his fans:
“Ah man, this fella is only at £300! “If I know you lot, I know we can get him to £1,000 before lunch! Let’s donate a pound each and surprise the hell out of this legend.”
On 31st October, the last day of his walk, Jeffrey said:
“I am absolutely overwhelmed with the support. This walk has been the hardest so far. I have hurt a hamstring but will get to the end. Usually I feel around 35-years-old; 25 when I am in combat gear. Today I feel a little more than that.”
Jeffrey’s story has been shared from Paula’s personal social media account more than 11000 times. He has been supported by over 15,950 people and have risen so far over £110 000!
