BRITISH LEGION LAUNCHES POPPY APPEAL 2017

As the UK prepares to acknowledge Armistice Day on 11th November, the British Legion have launched their renowned ‘Poppy Appeal’ in an attempt to raise funds for the Armed Forces Community.Poppy Appeal 2017

November serves as a Remembrance period for the charity, who were formed in May 1912 and have evolved over time, caring for servicemen who were wounded in the First World War to current day veterans who face challenges when leaving the military.

The ‘Poppy Appeal’ was introduced on the very first Armistice Day on 11th November 1921 and has continued ever since. This year, the British legion’s campaign is encouraging the public to rethink the meaning of the poppy and recognise that it represents support of the entire Armed Forces, past and present. The charity have installed lines from the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ in iconic locations across the UK, including on Dunkirk Beach, on the White Cliffs of Dover and at Salford Quays in Manchester.

Claire Rowcliffe, the Royal British Legion’s Director of Fundraising, said:

“The Poppy Appeal 2017 is encouraging the public to recognise that your poppy supports the Armed Forces community past and present, and is a symbol of both Remembrance and hope.

“The work of the Legion is as relevant and vital today as it was in the aftermath of the First World War when the charity was founded.

“The donation for your poppy will help the Legion support today’s Armed Forces community through hardships, injury and bereavements.

“We’re encouraging people to dig deep for this year’s Poppy Appeal to help us raise £47 million. The Legion’s work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support – so please wear your poppy with pride.”
